Insight: We’re going to make it pink

In 2004 I was lucky to be part of the inaugural class of W+K 12, a school, that was an experiment, inside of Wieden+Kennedy Portland. We were only 13 people/students/guinea pigs, but it was very exciting what we could accomplish. One of our projects was to create a spread for the publication Um-bauhaus, a German magazine from the fabled architecture/design school. Our proposal was a giant fold-out hand drawn manifesto on creativity, and we decided to make it pink. It was very “Un-bauhaus,” and we were sure they were going to hate it but they loved it. They made the entire issue based around pink, and loved how we had broken the conformity and rigidity of their style.
